Here is a quick reference key so you can understand some terms used on my site.
CERF: This stands for Canine Eye Registration Foundation. Some websites use this term freely, ones that CERFs their dogs actually sends in their Eye Screening sheet to CERF. IF they do not send it in to be reviewed by a second board of Eye specialists to go over and reevaluate the optimoligests findings, they are not CERFed but only screened. You should be able to double check all findings by calling where they had their screening done (all screenings have a number that is original to that application) or double check on the CERF web site, after a year if not rechecked it is removed from the OFA website, another way to double check to see if the health testing is done, or are they just saying it is?
Here is the CERF website.
The website has other valuable tools on it other then the Certification On Line Verification. Please have a look.
OFA: This stands for the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. They also have an online Verification, it is very helpful to double check peoples websites to be sure they are doing what they say they are, anyone doing OFA has the option to keep results anonyms, if this is the case ASK to see the OFA paper from OFA, some people are dishonest and claim results on their websites that are far from the truth, or claim they OFA but do not post results. OFA does more then Hips but Hips and eyes are the only tests recommended for Siberians because this is our Problem areas in this breed, Doing more test is nice, but not necessary. Elbows, Heart, Thyroid, Knees and Shoulders are among some of the tests they offer. If you notice on most of my pages you will see VPI listed after their OFA# This means: Verified personal Identification, before doing the test, this means they scan the Microchip then look at my AKC papers that I brought along looking for that Microchip number and when they pass the findings on the AKC they can Verify that it is the same dog a second time. I encourage all people doing the health testing to VPI.
This is the OFA website.
The website explains all conditions and the tests and why they are important, it also offers things like woolly testing and OFA gathers DNA (working with VetGen) samples from effected and non effected dogs for conditions like Epilepsy and PRA in hopes they can narrow down and figure out the genes causing such conditions.
DNA: I DNA all my dogs, this means I take a small cell sample and send it into the AKC(dead cheek cells from in the mouth with saliva), True this is not a necessary thing and some people scoff at the thought that I even DNA my females, but in doing this I can't pass puppies off saying they are from parents they aren't and also it proves to others that my Pedigrees are correct. Between the Micro chipping and the DNA on file at the AKC it means I cannot change puppies from litter to litter (some kennels do this if they have a dog/bitch that failed a health test but they don't want ANYONE to know they bred that dog/bitch they pass it off for another dogs or bitches offspring). I find comfort in doing this due to the fact there is a solid paper and evidence trail proving all is correct. If parentage ever comes into question with someone who owns one of my puppies all they have to do is submit a sample to AKC, problem solved :)
This page is still a work in progress, anytime I have spare time I will add/change the info on this page.
